The previous owner made some significant modifications to the bass which are reflected in the price. The bass plays wonderfully with nice comfortable action, proper neck relief, and is fully intonated.
Here's a list of the modifications from the headstock down:
- The headstock was reshaped. It was originally a 4-In-Line headstock and it was cut and made into a 2x2 headstock. The original tuners were replaced with GraphTech Ratio Tuners. There are a few filled screw holes on the headstock (string tree screw holes, one tuner screw hole)
- Dot inlays were added to the fretboard
- The original Bartolini pickups were swapped for Dimarzio Relentless J pickups. There is a bit of wood filler around the bridge pickup route
- The original bridge was swapped. The previous owner wanted the new bridge to sit flush with the body instead of on top so he routed about 1mm into the body to recess the bridge. There are plugged screw holes from the old bridge.
- The bass was original top-loaded. The previous owner turned the bass into a string-through bass . There's quite a bit of filled chip out around the string through ferrules
- The original knobs were swapped to gold and an additional plugged hole was added. I believe the idea was to make it Vol/Vol and 3 band EQ, but he ended up just staying with the original electronic controls.
As far as wear and tear goes:
There are shallow scratches on the headstock. There is a skinny scratch/shallow indent on the back of the neck around fret 3. The frets are very clean with no wear whatsoever. The front of the body has little to no play wear. The back of the body has a several indents/scratches from playing. There is a non-structural crack by one of the neck screws seemingly from a sideways impact on the body behind the neck.
Overall the bass plays great and sounds fantastic. It is a beautifully built bass and this is a great opportunity to score a very expensive bass at a great price due to the modifications.
